Botany, Nature and Doggie Birthdays….

Keilee loves to take pictures.† She will go months and barely touch the camera and then just go on a shooting [camera that is] spree.† Here are some of her latest pictures.† I love the way she sees things. She also really likes ‘macro’ shots.

We did lots of learning this week and it mainly seemed to revolve around botany and nature.† I think the amazing weather had something to do with that.

1.†† Lovely glass bottle set my brother got at a garage sale for $1.† As soon as I saw it I begged him to let me have it.† Keilee made all sorts of flower potions this week.

2.†† Keilee’s drawing of the parts of a plant.† We also did a really cool experiment that I plan to share later.

3.†† Keilee sitting in her tree reading one of our† “National Audubon Society Field Guides”.† I think this one was “Birds”. † You have to get these books if you don’t have them.† I got mine as a Secret Sister gift in our homeschool group a couple of years ago.† We love them!

4.†† Tuesday was Nomad’s 2nd birthday.† Keilee made him a peanut butter and carrot ‘cake’.† We also bought him toys.† This is the hat he wears on each birthday.† He has worn it several times because Keilee used to make us celebrate every ‘MONTH’ birthday!

5.†† Keilee and Nomad ‘cuddling’.

6.†† Keilee planted broccoli and peas in her garden.† She has decided the reason nothing ever grows is because it isn’t HER garden exclusively.† She worked for hours on this.

7.†† Keilee’s miracle potion.† She rubbed it all over my legs and arms!† Someone needs to polish their fingernails; I’m just sayin’.

My favorite resource this week is a good one!† It is a YouTube channel called “History Teachers“.† They take current songs and write songs that talk about all sorts of history events.† Let me tell you after listening to the one below Keilee will NEVER forget that ‘fleas on rats’ caused the Black Death!† *Disclaimer, the videos we watched were all appropriate but I think these are for ‘high school’ so view at your discretion.

  1. Her photography is phenomenal — she’s very talented. And I LOVE the fact that she made Nomad a birthday cake. That kid is awesome!

  2. great wrap up and favorite resources! I wanna know how she made her flower potions! that sounds like fun – I really like the nature journal pic of the flower – is that an iris? just beautiful – great job mama!

  3. Where do you find these amazing resources? Every week I learn something new from you. Totally going to check out the history site. We are so far behind right now in SOTW that we need to speed things up and hopefully I can find some videos to tie in the the upcoming chapters. SOTW was the one thing I did not want to fall behind on so that Grace can focus on US history in “high school” which means I have about 30 chapters to do between now and September! Yikes!

Thankfully now that the DI pace has slowed down we can get back to some home based learning! I have not taken a picture of my girls in a few weeks! I could not even contribute to Mary’s collage Friday!

  4. Wow! She seems so, hm, into her learning! And very driven! Do you have to prompt or ENCOURAGE her in her school work? And she does such varied things! How nice to be “rounded”. LOVE her macro yellow flower in the middle! And she’s QUITE a good artist! I hope her garden grows well this season!

  5. I love Keilee’s photos!! We made Ollie cupcakes for his birthday and let him eat one! He ate it in one gulp. We made sure they were a kind that was safe for dogs.

  6. What awesome photos! Kei has an amazing eye! I love the one of the sun coming through and of course, the one of her in the tree is great! How incredible to be able to have the opportunity to go read in a tree! You are right, homeschooling truly does rock! :-)) We planted some peas this year, too, and are trying spinach for the first time. We also have cucumbers that just sprouted. 🙂 The kids wanted to start them from seeds. It has been cold all of a sudden this week (with frost warnings and all!), so they are staying indoors for now. Hopefully, we can put them outdoors before too long. Way to go that your daughter is undertaking the garden! 🙂

It is always like a breath of fresh air reading your blog! Your daughter is obviously thriving and learning so much in an interest-based, hands-on manner. Love it! I am trying, day by day, to get away from the “school at home” model and allow my children more flexibility, too. I’m getting there! 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  7. Keilee’s photos are super!! I agree with Jenn, though…the one of Kei in the tree is the best 🙂 LOVE the flower potions and all of the botany study…totally something my girls would do!
I will be checking out that YouTube channel you linked…thanks for sharing with Favorite Resources!

  8. Oh, how beautiful everything is! I especially love the sketch of the flower!! Your week is so full of life and beauty…so much spring.

  9. My girls take most of their photos on the macro setting too:) Maybe they are on to something… Kei’s photos are beautiful!

My favorite photo of all is the one of her in the tree! Now that’s joyful learning:)

Saw your quote from Geaorge Washington Carver…we are going to the GWC National Museum today! He’s someone I have always admired:)

  10. We have one of the birds field guides and it is so helpful!

I always admire your freedom and flexibility and the way you just are letting Kei grow into her own person. What a blessed mom and daughter you two are!
