Creating, Courthouse and Academia…

I suwannee [that is a southern word we say instead of “I swear”, Actually I don’t say it, but it just seems fitting]…anyhoo I digress… We have been so busy going places that I am plum tuckered out … and I have no clue why I am typing in ‘Country Southern’ ????…..

It is like that for us every Spring.† I think people are so tired of being stuck inside they go ‘field trip’ crazy.† At least homeschoolers do!

We had a blast this past week.† And we even learned too!

We took a field trip to the Courthouse.† We sat in on a “County Commission” meeting.† All of us got a copy of the minutes and Keilee even marked how they voted.† All the councilmen came and talked to us afterward and it was really awesome.† Then we got to go into the EMA [Emergency Management Agency] located in the basement.† That was SO COOL!† The man that spoke to us told us all the procedures for emergencies and how they had vamped it up since the April 2011 tornadoes.† Keilee really loved it.† She even said she thought working there would be really interesting.

Keilee is working on a stop animation movie that she is making with paper toys.† These are the city of Paris and we found them here.†

One of Keilee’s play friends has really bad allergies.† She is a 2nd grader and Keilee found out she had to wear a mask when she went outside to play at home or at school.† So Keilee made her a BEJEWELED mask!!† Isn’t this awesome??† Maggie loved it.† One of our dear friends 2 year old daughter has leukemia and spends so much of her time wearing a mask.† Keilee told me she wants to make Ava a mask and also make a bunch more for Ava’s Mom to take to the Children’s Hospital for the kids that need them.† I love Keilee’s heart.

This is our left over knit pieces that we hung outside for the birds.† We are impatiently waiting to spot a colorful bird’s nest made from them.

Keilee found her first ever 4 leaf clover.† I am sorta the Queen of finding 4 leaf clovers and she always gets all bummed, but she finally found one!

We also had Field Day.† Does your homeschool group do this?† We have a blast every year.† Look at the bottom right picture.† This is the mile run.† What did these homeschoolers do as they were about to cross the finish line?† Joined hands and crossed TOGETHER!† How cool is that?

In our ‘school week’ we did 3 Teaching Textbook lessons [thank you ONCE again Theresa!], did our Botany lesson, learned about Joan of Arc and watched “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc“, this is rated R for violence as in ‘heads getting cut off’ but we really enjoyed the movie. I always love to find a movie about what we are studying.†

Keilee is reading her 3rd Poison Apple book. She actually likes them.† Not enough to read more than her 2 chapters a day but she doesn’t complain.† Thank you Jessica for this recommendation!

We also did a Robin Study and decided we are going to dig up some worms for our Robins!† Keilee sat in her treehouse and observed them for an hour and drew in her Nature journal.

We also have had practice for “The Princess and The Pea”.

My “Favorite Resource” is one Keilee spent HOURS on this week.† You use beautiful drawings to make your own stories.† You can then ‘publish’ them to the site.† The site is called “Story Bird”

Finally, with everything blooming and so beautiful I just had to take pictures.† My girl is growing up too fast.† I wish I could stop time some days…

Happily linking up with

  1. Isn’t it great to get out of the house after the looooooong winter! That courthouse trip sounds really interesting. It’s so important for kids to learn how their communities work!

So sweet that Keilee wants to make fancy masks! I love all the jewels!

  2. You guys take the coolest trips! I have to mark that down on my list for future trips to take with the kids when they get older. Did you go by yourself or was it a trip set up with other homeschoolers as well?

I just came from the Storybirds site. I love it! I can’t wait to show it to the kids tomorrow. I know they’ll want to create stories together. I bet we’ll spend several hours there together. What an amazing way to give kids a little taste of what it would be like to create and publish their own book.

  3. Hi Karen! I have missed reading your posts. We have been crazy busy but things are more normal now. You have the sweetest and most creative daughter. Tell her we think she’s awesome. You’ve done a great job too mom. I’m glad you had such a great week and look forward to reading the rest of the posts I’ve missed! Take care lady!

  4. so great catching up with you! we have been super busy, too! love that kei is having fun on such ‘mature’ field trips. 😉 they grow up too fast, yes?? *sigh*

your girlie is so creative & sweet! how generous of her to make those masks for everyone. we love finding a good movie that corresponds with what we’re learning, too… but they seem to be few and far between.

great pix of your beautiful girl!

  5. If I could define the “perfect week”… this would be it!

Love Keilee’s compassionate heart and her love for learning:)

You girls are awesome (and though you couldn’t hear me when I said it just then…trust me, it had a southern twang to it)!!

  6. Karen, Kei’s masks reminded me of a story I read about a while ago. A girl made beaded bracelets to raise money for cancer. She set up a website and once the local news covered the story her charity took off. Kei’s masks are gorgeous. We all (unfortunately) know of a family who has a member battling illness or someone with allergies. She could raise tons of money for a charity of her choice, or even start her own charity with these. I would pay her to design a mask for someone I loved.

She is doing amazing things with her life. I am so proud of her and I have not had the opportunity to meet her yet!

Wait till Grace hears you visited the command center. She dreams of visiting a center like this where alerts are issues and peoples lives are hopefully saved. Awesome.

  7. I love Kei’s heart, too. So, so much goodness in both of you, just shines in the photos and in the words. Sigh. {hugs}

  8. Keilee is just so beautiful and considerate. I know you are proud of her…

Off to check out Storybird. Thanks!

  9. Karen, as always, I love every single thing about this post, and all the things you two have been up to. You always have such cool adventures every weekóand what an energetic, beautiful homeschool community you’re a part of! So many field trips! I love that the kids are so supportive of each other. I loved the mile run ending 🙂

Kei is an extraordinary young womanóshe thinks of others and does so much for others, and just seems to have this incredible inner glow. I think she’s amazing. I can just imagine the look that will be on the kids’ faces when she shows them her masks. Beautiful.

The kindness and generosity you two have, about everything in life, towards your friends, family, your community and the people you reach through you church, is SO inspiring, Karen. Thanks, as always for sharing here. Much love!

  10. What an awesome week! Wow! 🙂 The pictures of Keilee are just beautiful. How absolutely sweet of her to make the bejeweled mask! What a great kid you have there, mom! :-)))) The trip to the council meeting sounds like fun. How nice that they took the time to talk to the kids and take them for a tour! That can make all the difference. And I just love how the kids all held hands to cross the finish line. Can we come school with you and join your homeschool group? lol. 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend!

  11. Love the face mask idea for the little ones in the hospital.

When one of my children does something that shows compassion, it makes me so proud. Much more than a great report card or an athletic award or a music award… not that those things aren’t wonderful, but what’s in their hearts is truly who they are… and a child does not come up with an idea like the bejeweled face masks without a lovely and compassionate upbringing.

    🙂

  12. Sounds like another busy and fun filled week! I hope you’ll share Keilee’s stop action movie when it’s done, if, of course, she’s willing.

    Stoybird looks really cool.

  13. As always, looks like an awesome week Karen! Those pictures of Keilee are so beautiful, I just have to say 🙂
It’s funny, I was just thinking yesterday of seeing if my girls might like to do a robin study soon…great minds think alike?
Keilee does have such a kind heart! I never would have thought of making bejeweled face masks!
Thanks for linking…Story Bird sounds like a neat site.
    Have a great weekend!
